Home

Is this an official tourism site?

No. It is an independent guide. It links to park management boards, the national tourism authority and government portals so you can check each rule yourself.

Can you book a cave tour or a permit for me?

No. The guide does not sell anything or take bookings, and it does not name or rate tour companies.

Which month suits most of these places at once?

September and October come closest in the north: golden terraces, strong waterfalls and dry passes. That is also when central Vietnam floods, so caves in Phong Nha are at their least accessible from October.

Why do the place pages use two province names?

Vietnam merged its provinces on 1 July 2025. Quang Binh is now part of Quang Tri, Yen Bai of Lao Cai, and Ha Giang of Tuyen Quang. Older maps and tickets still use the earlier names.

Places

Can I combine Ban Gioc and Dong Van in one trip?

Yes. Both are on the Chinese border in the far north. Allow several days, because the roads between them are mountain roads, and avoid the summer rains when landslides close sections.

Which place is easiest to reach from Hanoi?

Phong Nha, by flight to Dong Hoi, in terms of time. By road, Ha Giang city and Cao Bang city are each six to eight hours from Hanoi.

Is there a month that suits all four?

No. September comes closest in the north, but Phong Nha enters its rainy season from October.

Why are national parks not on this page?

They are covered on the national parks and wildlife page, which deals with what you can realistically see.

Phong Nha–Ke Bang

Can I visit Phong Nha caves without a tour?

Yes for Phong Nha Cave, Tien Son and Paradise Cave: tickets are sold on site. Hang En, Tu Lan, Hang Va and Son Doong are guided trips only.

Is Son Doong open all year?

No. Expeditions run from January to August, and the cave is closed from September to December.

Will the caves be open in November?

Some may be, many will not. October to December is the rainy season, with flooding in October and November. Keep the plan flexible and check with the site the day before.

Is it Quang Binh or Quang Tri?

Both appear. Quang Binh was merged into Quang Tri province on 1 July 2025, so the official name is now Quang Tri, but many signs and tickets still say Quang Binh.

Ban Gioc Waterfall

When is Ban Gioc fullest?

June to August has the most water, but the roads are riskiest then. September and October are the usual compromise: high water, clearer river and drier roads.

Do I need a border permit for Ban Gioc?

Independent guides report that no permit is needed to buy a ticket. Carry your passport, because checks are possible near the border checkpoint.

Can I walk over to the Chinese side?

Not as a foreign tourist. The cross-border pilot opened for Vietnamese and Chinese tourists only.

How long does it take from Hanoi?

Six to eight hours by sleeper bus to Cao Bang city, then about two hours by car to the falls.

Mu Cang Chai

When exactly is the water season?

Late May to early June, according to the tourism authority. Ploughing and planting can start a little earlier or later depending on the rains.

Is the harvest over by mid-October?

Much of it, yes. Early October is the peak and many fields are harvested after about 15 October.

Can I take the train to Mu Cang Chai?

Only part of the way. Take the train to Yen Bai station, about four hours from Hanoi, then about four hours by road.

Do I need a guide?

Not to see the terraces from the road. To reach La Pan Tan, Mam Xoi or Che Cu Nha safely, a local driver or guide helps, especially after rain.

Dong Van Karst Plateau

Is Ha Giang still a province?

No. Since 1 July 2025 it has been part of Tuyen Quang province. Ha Giang city is still the starting point and the name is still widely used.

Do foreigners need a permit for Dong Van?

Areas close to the border may need permission from the provincial police. We could not confirm the current procedure from an official source; ask locally before you set out.

When do the buckwheat flowers bloom?

October to November, according to the tourism authority.

How deep is the Nho Que canyon?

UNESCO gives 700 to 800 metres for Tu San canyon, the deepest part.

Nature calendar

What is the single month with the most going on?

September, in the north: golden terraces, a strong Ban Gioc and the first dry weeks on the passes. Phong Nha is still accessible in September but its rainy season follows.

Is there anything worth seeing in winter?

Yes. The caves of Phong Nha reopen from January, Cat Tien is in its dry season, and Ban Gioc is clear if not full. The northern terraces are bare.

How reliable are these dates?

They are season patterns taken from the sources shown, not forecasts. Farming dates move with the rain, and storms do not follow calendars.

Where can I check this year’s conditions?

The UK Foreign Office points to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting for storm warnings. Local news and your accommodation are the quickest sources for road closures.

Read in full: Nature calendar.

Caves

Which caves can I visit without booking?

Phong Nha Cave, Tien Son and Paradise Cave sell tickets on site. Adventure and expedition caves need booking.

Can I join Son Doong at short notice?

Not in 2026 or 2027: places were reported fully booked in March 2026, with about 1,000 a year available.

Is caving possible in the rainy season?

Some walk-in caves may stay open, but many caves cannot be reached from October to December, and Son Doong closes from September.

Do I need caving experience for Hang En?

No caving experience, but a moderate level of fitness for a jungle trek with river crossings.

Read in full: Caves.

Rice terraces

When are the terraces full of water?

Late May to early June at Mu Cang Chai, according to the tourism authority. Dates move with the rains.

When is the rice golden?

September to early October in the high north. Many fields at Mu Cang Chai are harvested after about 15 October.

Is Sa Pa or Mu Cang Chai better for terraces?

They suit different trips. Mu Cang Chai has a protected terrace area and fewer trails; Sa Pa has more trekking routes and more visitors. Both follow the same farming calendar.

Can I see terraces in December?

You can see the shapes of the terraces, but the fields are cut or bare and often under cloud.

Read in full: Rice terraces.

Waterfalls

When is Ban Gioc at its fullest?

June to August, when the roads are also at their riskiest. September and October are the usual compromise.

Can I swim under the waterfalls?

At Ban Gioc, not unless guides or signs say so. Pools below falls have deep currents in high water.

Where is Dray Nur?

On the Serepok River in Dak Lak province, about 30 km south of Buon Ma Thuot.

Why do some guides say Ban Gioc is 30 metres and others 53?

The tourism authority gives 53 metres; most other guides describe a drop of about 30 metres in several tiers. The difference is probably what is being measured.

UNESCO Global Geoparks

How many UNESCO Global Geoparks does Vietnam have?

Four: Dong Van Karst Plateau, Non Nuoc Cao Bang, Dak Nong and Lang Son, the newest, announced in April 2025.

Is a geopark the same as a national park?

No. People live and farm inside a geopark, and there is usually no single entrance or ticket. National parks are protected forest areas with rules on access.

Do I need a ticket to enter a geopark?

Not for the geopark as a whole. Individual sites inside it, such as Ban Gioc or a cave, have their own tickets.

National parks and wildlife

Where am I most likely to see gibbons?

Cat Tien, on a dawn trek. You are more likely to hear them than see them clearly; there is a rescue centre at Dao Tien.

When is butterfly season in Cuc Phuong?

April and May, with about 400 species recorded. It is also the park’s busiest period.

Are there rhinos in Cat Tien?

No. The last Javan rhino in Vietnam was found dead in Cat Tien in 2010 and the species was declared extinct in the country in 2011.

Which months are worst for leeches?

The rainy season. At Cat Tien that is roughly mid-May to November, with peak rain from July to September.

Weather and closures

When is typhoon season in Vietnam?

Normally May to November, according to the UK Foreign Office, though storms can occur at other times.

Which months flood central Vietnam?

October and November are the usual months for seasonal flooding, within a rain season that runs from October to December.

Are the northern mountains safe in summer?

Travel is possible, but June to September is the rain season in the north and landslides block roads. Keep spare days and follow local closures.

Will I get a refund if a cave closes?

That depends on the seller and your insurance, not on this guide. Ask before you pay.

Read in full: Weather and closures.

Responsible visiting

Is it acceptable to fly a drone over the terraces?

Check local rules first, keep well away from people and livestock, and avoid border areas entirely.

Should I pay viewpoint fees on farmland?

Yes. Fees at private viewpoints are small and go to the families who build and maintain the terraces.

Do I need a guide in national parks?

For many activities, yes; the UK Foreign Office notes that in some places it is illegal to go without a guide.

About

Who writes the guide?

The Vietnam Awesome editors, who are named as the author on every page.

Do you accept payment to mention a place or business?

No payment buys a mention in the text. Advertising, when there is any, appears only in labelled spaces.

Why do some prices come from commercial websites?

Because official, dated price lists are rare for natural sites. We label those sources and present the figures as ranges to check.

How do I report a mistake?

Use the form on the contact page. Say which page, what is wrong and how you know.

Read in full: About.

Contact

How quickly do you reply?

We reply by email when a message needs an answer. Corrections are checked against a source before a page changes, which can take longer than a reply.

Can I phone the editors?

The guide works by email and the form only. No phone number is published.

Will you publish my name?

Not unless you ask. A correction is credited to “a reader” by default.
